LEAF PINTLE
 Leaf Pintle Hinge
The leaf pintle is installed in a similar way as a butt hinge. The thing you must remember is that all of this hardware is handmade so that it will vary slightly, measure each piece individually. Follow A, B, and C in the diagram.
- Place the strap hinges on the pintle in the relation they will be when the door is swung.
- Measure from the back face of the strap hinge to the far edge of the leaf of the pintle. You now have the measurement from the edge of the door jamb to the far edge of the leaf, "C".
With that measurement you can place the pintle leaf on the door jamb and mark it, then mortise into place.
You now wedge the door into place, put the strap hinge on the pintle, level it out, drill for the tip point and fasten in place with the screws.
CHEST HINGE #B12 & #B13
The early chest hinges were security hinges. It was fastened from the inside and the hinge pin was 80% within the structure of the chest. This was to ensure the pin could not be driven out and contents of the chest invaded. Our hasp #040 is similar with all its fastenings covered for security.
Installation:
Cut a notch in the back of the chest so that the long leg of the hinge is flush with the top rim of the chest. The chest top will open 90 degrees and you will use a swinging prop stick to hold it open.

Latch Bars for Interior Latches
CENTER HINGE #B4
Before installing these hinges, be absolutely sure the frame or jambs are straight.
This hinge pintle takes a little patience to install. The three pins on all three pintles need to be absolutely in line. This work should be done by a carpenter or someone with woodworking experience. If you are that someone, you will need an accurate straightedge that you can attach standoff blocks to. You can get close with blocks top and bottom but for the final twitch you will want the three blocks in place.
THUMB LATCHES
- When locating a thumb latch on a door be careful to center the latch on the side rail and be sure that the latch bar locates on the center cross rail. Usually the thumber locates 36" from the floor, but the most important thing is for the latch bar to locate on the cross rail.
- The slot in the door for the thumber to pass through should be vertical. 1/4" x 7/8". When making the slot drill a 1/4" hole at the top and bottom of your slot location marks. Be sure these holes are absolutely square with the door surface. One way to insure a "straight through" hole is to have a 1/4" hole drilled on a drill press through an oak block and to use this as a guide to keep the hole true. A 1/4" electricians drill bit will be long enough to go through the oak block and the door. Once drilled, join these two holes with a narrow blade in a saber saw and you should have a neat slot for the thumber. CAUTION: the narrow blade of a saber saw tends to wander when pushed too hard.
- Latch Bar Guide and Keeper is set to "A", see diagram for placement.
STRAP HINGES
The two types of pintles for these hinges to swing on are Leaf Pintle and Drive Pintle.
DRIVE PINTLE
To install a drive pintle drill a hole 3/8" x 3" deep. Drive the pintle in until it is 1/2" from its final resting place. After both pintles are in place, wedge your door into place and then place the hinges on the pintles. Level the hinges out and mark the door with the pointed (spear) ends of the straps. Your doors are wedged in place and the straps are held in place at the far ends. Now continue to drive the pintles in until the straps are in contact with the door. Put the remaining screws in place. |
